THE  CURIOUS  POTTER

Loving the alchemy
of glazes

Perfect Lines + Interesting Glazes = Happiness!

I love to play and explore the combinations of different minerals, create beautiful glazes out of them and then see how they interact with each other.

Clear, simple, but perfect lines act as the canvas for my glazes.

What I do

I create beautifully shaped bowls, vessels and plates decorated with gorgeous glazes in my workshop in the heart of Pembrokeshire.

Handmade

I mainly work on the wheel, throwing the pots.

The clay body is a mix of Ashraf Hanna's stoneware clay and porcellain. This combines stability with a smoother finish.

Once the items become leather hard, they are further refined.

Bisque Fired

After having dried out completely, the pots go through an initial "bisque" firing at between 800 and a 1000 degrees Celsius, which closes the clay.

They have their own etheral beauty - perfectly white and with a matte finish.

The Glazing

This is were it gets messy!

The pots might get sprayed, painted or dipped in glaze.

How thin or thick the glaze is in the first place, how thick it is applied and even if the inside and the outside of the piece are glazed at the same time - all of this will make a difference to how the glaze will appear in the end!

The Glaze Firing

Opening the kiln is always exciting!

There are even more variables now!

How will the glazes interact in the kiln? How much oxygen or not is in the kiln can completely change the colours! And even with firing temperatures of over 1200 degree Celsius, a change of 10 or 20 Celsius makes a difference!

Now you know why potters hope that the "kiln gods" will have been kind to them when they open the kiln.
